Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo (Art Gallery)

The Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo, an art gallery in the elegant Palazzo Martinengo da Barco, offers a well-stocked exhibition of works, especially paintings, in its 21 rooms. Among the names that steal the show in the Pinacoteca are Canova, Hayez, Raffaello, Ceruti, Lotto: a rich and varied artistic collection of paintings of immense value, with great works by Raphael, Madonna col Bambino (Madonna and Child), L’Angelo (The Angel), Cristo Redentore benedicente (Blessing Christ the Redeemer) that have returned to Brescia after being exhibited in the world’s most important museums, including the National Gallery in London, while the Pinacoteca remained closed.

The collection dedicated to Brescian Renaissance painting is very important: Moretto, Romanino, Savoldo and Foppa are among the undisputed protagonists of this movement; their prestigious works of art had a profound significance on the Brescia area.

Examples of other decorative arts of the period, such as goldsmiths’ work, ivory, enamel, medals, glass and plaques, can also be admired along the tour. After having undergone recent reorganisation, it was decided to expand certain sections to cover the period from the late Gothic to the early 19th century, which included large commissions by Paolo Tosio, Leopardo Martinengo da Barco and Camillo Brozzoni.
